Thermographic Signal Reconstruction (TSR)

In pulsed thermography, a heat source such as a brief pulse of light is used to heat the surface of a sample, while an infrared camera records changes in the surface temperature. As the sample cools, the surface temperature is affected by internal flaws such as disbonds, voids or inclusions, which obstruct the flow of heat into the sample.

Flash thermography, combined with TWI's Thermographic Signal Reconstruction (TSR) method provides the fastest, most quantifiable and repeatable approach to thermography for NDT. For many applications, TWI flash/TSR systems have proved to be viable, cost effective replacements for visual, ultrasound, radiography or laser shearography methods.

For many applications, thermographic NDT has proven to be a cost effective alternative to traditional inspection technologies such as x-ray, ultrasound or eddy-current. TWI has been at the forefront of the growth and development of the technology, and has consistently defined the state-of-the-art through our products, services and R&D activities.

Aerospace Applications

TWI solutions address a wide range of aerospace applications, including thermographic testing of jet engine turbine vanes, inspection of composite helicopter propellers, adhesive disbonds on aircraft fuselage components and inspection of the wing leading edge on the NASA Space Shuttle.

Automotive Applications

Typical automotive applications for Thermographic NDT include inspection of spot welds, detection of corrosion, and inspection of adhesive bonding.

EchoTherm is the system of choice for any tough non-destructive evaluation (NDE) application – from automated manufacturing to aircraft inspection. The system provides fast, non-contact, wide area inspection of flat or curved structures, and can measure depth and area of subsurface defects. Since its introduction in 1992, EchoTherm has been the benchmark system for thermographic NDE.


Portability for the field—that’s the driving force behind ThermoScope III. Combining flash heating, image acquisition and analysis, this unit allows a single user to perform the inspection with ease and simplicity.
